DOOMAIN: se(l)ves
Phased Research-Creation Project, 2026First phase of DOOMAIN, Second chapter of the DOOM series.
DOOMAIN: se(l)ves is the first phased work of DOOMAIN, the second chapter in Cheng Daoyuan’s research-creation series DOOM. Taking this work as an anchor, Cheng will continue to develop and refine the project. In the previous work, DOOME: Null Gods, he transformed the relationship between collective consciousness and virtual deities into an extremal point within a digital dimension, which led him to consider the extremity of points, boundaries, and the possibilities that follow. DOOMAIN: se(l)ves unfolds from this extremal point toward multiple quadrants, exploring the extremities and ambiguity of boundaries within this expansion. Beginning with the philosophical frameworks including phenomenology, Cheng shifts the site of experimentation from the digital to the physical world. Through acoustic, electromagnetic, and mechanical phenomena, he seeks out resonant properties among them and attempts to apply these qualities to the design of the installation, tracing the boundaries of imagery on a real-world scale.
This phase of DOOMAIN: se(l)ves consists of a kinetic sound installation, two extended sound works, a creative process publication, and a presentation video. The installation is built upon a base composed of wood, stainless steel, and aluminum plates, combined with a two-axis linear stage mechanism as its main structure and source of motion, a metal stylus is installed above the moving platform. Through randomized movements within a defined range, it produces unpredictable contact and electromagnetic interactions with components such as steel plates, pickups, and speakers, while simultaneously generating sonic amplification and feedback. Through physical contact, electromagnetic attraction, acoustic feedback, and other forms of interaction, the boundaries between different phenomena intersect randomly with one another, extending toward the ambiguous extremity through invisible repetitions within an unknown cycle.
Cheng selected unprocessed sounds produced by the installation to create the first track, Mutatis. He then used these recordings as source material, extending, modulating, and reconstructing them into the second track, Mutandis, both tracks are released together on online platforms. The creative process publication presents a comprehensive record of the project, including research notes, creative writing, design sketches, testing documentation, and final images. The presentation video presents the installation in operation, capturing its different states, movements, and details.
